Are hydrangeas perennials? Can they be grown in a container?

We are zone 5 in Michigan and they grow great here in the ground.

Hi Madeleine. I am in US zone 7. I have over wintered hydrangeas in pots by putting them in the garage for the winter. When signs of frost where gone then I would put it back outside. I also have some that are planted in the ground and do come back every year. It may appear that they are dead but just leave them. The new growth and flowers come from the branches that look like they are dead, or need to be trimmed. There are a few Hydrangeas that do like to be trimmed. I would look to see what exact Hydrangea you have and see if that type likes to be trimmed or not. If I trim mine then it is most likely that I will have no flowers in summer.

Given the winter you have just had it may be best to place the pots in a heated garage which is not too hot. You could also dig the pot into the ground for the winter and then remove them in the Spring when it warms up. Do not leave them outside all winter.

They are Perennials. Yes the can be planted in pots.

Use a good quality potting soil with organic matter, not ordinary garden soil. Plant the hydrangea at the same level that it was in its original pot (that is, don't plant it deeper or higher than it was already growing). Leave some room below the rim of the pot, so you canwater.
