How do I grow Lavender in New Mexico?

I have tried numerous times to grow Lavender with 0 success. What variety, planting, location, etc. is best since I live in the desert/southwest? (Albuquerque)
I don't know a lot about it but one thing I do know is lavender needs to be in soil that drains. I've heard people say "lavender doesn't like to have it's feet wet".

Lavender can be a bit tricky sometimes. I can grow almost anything but have never been successful growing in pots indoors. I can grow in pots or in ground outdoors. They all need well draining soil.

I am in zone 9 and mine needs some shade as it gets brutally hot in summer. Places where they thrive, Washington, Oregon, France, Italy and Spain where you see fields as far as the eye can see, it doesn't get as hot as my back yard.
