Is it possible to grow hydrangeas in South Florida?

I live in South Florida. Very humid, very rainy. I love hydrangeas and lilacs. Can they thrive in these tropical temps? Container, in ground, or both?
I don't know how to grow them. I wanted to let you know I live a stone's throw from the mighty Pacific ocean. Hydrangeas, rhodedendrons, azaleas, all thrive here. For my 100% sand I mixed in compost about a foot deep. That's all I know.

Mary, make sure you get the types that like a lot of sun. I know there are some that prefer some shade.
They will grow near the beach. Look for pictures of gardens on Cape Cod, Nantucket, etc. If you have lots of sun, plant them on the side of the house that gets less sun (east, for morning sun, and north). Most hydrangeas like some sun.
Do Hydrangeas tolerate salt spray? I live right on the Pacific Ocean, and near a blow hole. Sometimes we get salt spray on the garden and I need to shower the non-tolerant plants soon after salt spray falls on them.
