I dead-head my roses when the stems turn brown. I have no idea where you are at, but in Kansas it is too late to trim any trimming (Especially if you trimmed too much.) would stunt them the following year. I try to get mine trimmed around October.
You should always trim either before the first frost in the fall or after the last frost in the spring.
You can "trim" or deadhead" all throughout the growing season to promote new growth and more blooms. "Pruning" is typically done in late winter to early spring depending on where you live. It helps to know your anticipated last frost dates for your area. Contact your local Ag Extension. I am in zone 9 and prune in late January to early February and have my first blooms by Easter. These will help.

I live in CA. The rules I use are: 1. Prune roses when the Forsythia blooms, and within a week of Super Bowl Sunday. :) Failproof.
