Annuals: coleus, impatiens, begonias etc., Perennials : brunnera, astilbe, hosta, lamium, Solomon's seal, etc.
It all starts with where you live and your USDA climate zone. If you live in Central Texas the plants that will be successful differ from those that will grow in Central Maine. Google USDA zone to determine what your zone is and then google Flowers for shade in whatever your zone is.
Oliva suggested the best ones. Hosta makes pretty purple flowers. If you have just part shade, many plants still flower. My echinachea, St John's wort, and hydrangea flower in part shade.
I think Hostas would be perfect. They have many different sizes as well as leaf colors (some with white or yellow patterns) that would add variety. They require watering if you don't get rain and the only pest I know is slugs and that is controllable with broken egg shells or coffee grounds around them. They also bloom a lily like flower on long stems. Best of all they are easily divided so you get more plants without buying more.
