Kathy has a good suggestion, hostas are a very adaptable plant that can handle shade. Have you thought about some ferns?
Some varities of Heucheras, Astilbes, Spiderwort, Bleeding Hearts, Acuba, Coleus, Brunnera are good in shade.
Bleeding Hearts would be good and easy to care for course it's not an annual.
