That doesn't look like any gardenia I've ever seen. I've never seen such long green "stems" to the leaves. Except for the few woody stems that are visible it looks more like a peace lily. Gardenia leaves are usually waxy/glossy and those leaves don't look like they ever were that texture. Sure it wasn't mislabeled? If it is a peace lily it needs more water and less sun. I'm also wondering if it could be what is sometimes called a "Florida gardenia" (has fragrant blooms like a gardenia) but isn't a true gardenia.
