I live in Central Texas and have a large flower pot (24" diameter) planted with lavender. We leave it outside all year. It dies back in the winter and comes out every spring and blooms all spring/summer.

I grow my lavender in both pots and ground, the main thing is they thrive in warm, well-drained soil and full sun. They don't like damp but come back year after year even in cold climates. If you grow the lavender in pots make sure the soil is well drained and they love full sun so make sure the pot get plenty of sunshine.
