Gardenia or Camellia

Question

Which is it ?? Live in zone 8 and it gets maybe 2 hours of sun in the morning, shade the rest of the day. I just fertilized it 2 days ago and put some straw around it.

Gardenia, camellias bloom in late fall, winter and very early spring in zone 8. Yours looks healthy.

When do yo prune it or since I want it to get larger and bushy do I leave it alone ???

The majority of the gardenias I have now are in mostly shaded areas. I do have a very large one that receives a great deal of afternoon sun. They all do very well. Pruning is done right after they have finished blooming. And the cuttings are pretty easy to root. And, you can fertilize with an acid fertilizer. Miracle Grow makes one for gardenias, camellias and azaleas. Hope this helps.

It's a gardenia for sure. I have had the worst luck with them this year. I planted at least 6 of them and only ONE is still doing anything. All of the others have turned yellow. Any advice on why? Various places from semi shady to sunny (sunny one looks fine) and evenly moist soil. Amended with compost.

Yellowing always means a fertilizer deficiency but sometimes it means the plant can't pick up the fertilizer that is in the soil because of a pH problem, a disease, brackish water or some other problem. Hope that helps Miss Carol Speake!

I love the fragrance of the Gardenias!! I have also had a hard time growing these. It seems like they thrive on neglect (which I can't give them! ha!). It seems like people who can't grow much can grow these! Where I live they do best along the sides of the walkways to the door. I think they like the protection. I now have a big beautiful one that is in full bloom. It is about 5 years old. I have it in a whiskey barrel and it receives only a couple of hours of sun in the afternoon. I'm just happy to have the one, as so many have died that I've planted.This one is staying put.

It's a Gardenia if its blooming now.  Camellias bloom in the winter.  I'm in zone 8a.

I see you live in La. and in East Texas they had what some call a Gardenia but the blooms and
leaves are larger than the basic Gardenia.. and it is called Cape Jasmine, the older folks had
them in their yards.. I do not know if they are sold at a nursery or not, but to me the photo looks
like the larger Cape Jasmine (which is still a Gardenia) .. also, in the shade I have had them to
get mildew when they are in mostly in the shade.. they say plant roses on the east side to get
the morning sun, that may be a good idea for the gardenia also.. I am a great grand mother
so what I remember is long, long ago..our Camellias bloom in February, March and April in
Central Texas near Austin.. I always get a red Camellia for Valentine from my lady mailcarrier..

I like both but have three different color, and bloom camellias. I keep them both trimmed thur the years so that now they trees and I just love them. Added bonus the birds love to nest in them. Also in my zone (7) I would have to put something around gardenia's to make sure they make it thur the winter.

It looks like this gardenia is in its 2nd year. One of my neighbors planted four for me. She dug the hole twice as big as the root, then put fertilizer. Covered the hole, then put newspaper and mulch. She then told me to trickle water for 20 minutes each day, which I did faithfully. The second year looked like yours and I did not have to water as much. It was in a partially sunny/shady spot. The third year you should prune in the fall to curtail its growth. Other than mulching, I did not do much.

Gardenia. I have about 20 bushes and they are all in the sun, some are about 6 foot tall and I have one that is about 10'. The scent is intoxicating.
