Gretchen on Apr 23, 2014The success with ornamental kale depends on your zone and the kale you put in. Here in Virginia, I plant it in the fall and it sticks around all winter - as the weather gets colder, it deepens in color. It does not spread but can grow a long neck as it gets older. There are many different ornamental kales with different colors and "ruffles." The deer do not bother it.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Apr 23, 2014This is an annual. Here in Atlanta they sometimes do very well...but the one time I planted them they grew into a tall stalk...not pretty. I think this is because we have had such different winters...one we are in t-shirts at Christmas, another it is almost too cold to decorate outside!Helpful Reply

Sharon Steeves on Apr 25, 2014It is Ornamental Kale and in Canada it is offered by the nurseries in late summer and early fall. People plant it in the gardens or urns for beautiful Thanksgiving and Fall gardens. It likes the cool and tolerates cold (to a point !....it freezes to death here eventually !!). To us, it is just a festive annual.Helpful Reply
