Your best bet is to go to a privately owned local nursery. They should have someone there that can show you everything and knows what they're doing. Or, if your county has an extension service, they might have Master Gardeners that are trained for just such advice. Catalogs are a good reference, but not always good about telling you all the conditions needed for the plants. You need someone who is an expert in your area.

Hardy perennials include: daisies, black eyed Susan's, coneflowers ( known as Echinace), coreopsis, sedum that I can think of off the top of my head that should be fairly easy to grown just about anywhere in the northern US--most of these are sun lovers.

For easy to grow annuals, try petunias, zinnias, snapdragons, marigolds. These do well in sun, but don't mind some shade.

Bushes.....this can get tricky as you want to be sure to give them enough room to grow into. Lilacs, forsythia, flowering quince, burning bush ( great autumn color!) and don't forget about roses!

Go visit some local greenhouses to get an idea for what grows best in your region. sometimes different garen centers, Lowe's, Home Depot, ace hardware has master gardeners cme in on weekends and you can ask them questions. County Extension offices are also a wealth of knowledge, too!! Have fun and happy planting!
