I have found it best to be a benevolent ignorer of Christmas cactus. They can be put outside when the weather is warm and make an insteresting green plant. Water only when dry and ignore them.
Lessen the water when it is not blooming. Give it good light in a window but not with direct sunlight. I trim back the leaves so that when they grow again they double or triple with new leaves coming out from where you snipped. This way it thickens the plant and gives you more flowers eventually.
The most helpful tip is to not overwater it. Only water it when the soil is really dry and then water it thoroughly. When all frost has passed, you can put it outside for the summer. In the Fall as the days begin to get shorter, water it less frequently and buds will begin to form about 8 weeks after that.
