Hostas should be cut to about 18 inches.

Around here they die back in the fall so I cut them to the ground.

    Hi Jane,

I've had hostas for years and have never cut them back for winter. The plant will die out on top but grow new leaves in the spring. I started with one piece of a hosta from a neighbor then every spring I'd take a little off the edge of the original plant (and later the newer plants). After several years of doing that, I had a lot of hostas planted around the gardens at our home. I even planted some of them in pots. I'd bring the pots into the garage in the fall and take them out when there would be no more frost in the spring. Every year the hostas in the pots would start growing again giving me a nice, green look anywhere I wanted it in our yard. Enjoy your hostas! They are a very hardy plant.
