Use a pruning seal to stop any further damage
I would get an arborist to inspect the tree and see if its still viable..... woodpeckers show up when a tree has insect invasion and could indicate the tree is about to fail.
We have a redheaded woodpecker family that toppled the top off of one of our palm tree and now it has several holes all around it. Other birds have been nesting in the holes. Not much you can do, because they will come back. Sorry about the picture quality, I didn't want to scare him away before I got some photos.
I found someone with the same problem and here is a Plant Expert Reply: Spray with a permethrin or pyrethrin based insecticide, depending on whether its outdoors or indoors, to prevent insects. If there is sponge-like or slimy tissue, it may need a fungicide, otherwise it should heal over.
