Soak the ginger root in warm water overnight to prepare for planting. Fill a shallow, wide plant pot (ginger roots grow horizontally) with rich, well-draining potting soil. Place the ginger root with the eye bud pointing up and cover it with 1-2 inches more of soil. Water lightly.

Hi Larry,

It depends on your hardiness zone. MN goes from 3 - 4. The article below says that you need hardiness zone 8 or possibly 7 (the lower the number the colder the weather). Having said that, take a look at the article and see what you think. Wishing you the best.

you can but I would plant in pot so I could bring indoors when weather turns cold.

Plant them in pots so you can bring them in when the weather gets too cold. Also they need to be in pots because they are invasive.
