My hostas turn brown and gummy, eventually disappearing. Any idea why

They are planted in front of the house, and the beds are covered with white stone. Any ideas?

May be snails or slugs. Put out bait that kills them. Do you see any slime trails? Those are a dead give away if you have slugs.
Could be being eaten by Slugs of Snails........
Are there any Snails on them? THey are often infested with snails. None has ever gotten to my Hosta's and I have had them for many years. IF you see snails , put out a small dish with BEER in it. I Have heard that is a good solution IF you have snails damaging the Hosta's . They go to it and drown.
