To prune hibiscus, wait until early spring so you don't disrupt the plant's growing season. When it's time to prune, cut off the tips of each branch to encourage new growth. You can also prune off larger sections of your plant to maintain its shape. If you notice any dead or diseased branches, cut those off as well.

Lightly prune in the late summer or early fall. The downsize to pruning during the late fall or winter would be fewer branch and bloom production in the spring and summer.
