Should one cut back a Clematis in the fall?

  • my neighbors cut theirs down to the ground every fall. And they come back very nicely each year.

    I am always afraid i will simply pull the thing out of the ground - it is really hard for me to identify! The invasive one i don't worry about ( sweet autumn clematis) but the pretty purple one is more delicate.

    Yes, I cut mine back every year, and cover it with good rich soil, and cover it with a pail. This will help a great deal, especially if you put a pail of leaves over the main stem of it, and I put bricks on the pail, to hold it during the winds. Best wishes, J.

    Yes, cut it back in the fall for a fuller healthier result in the spring. For now, just wait till frost is over and then prune it in early spring.
