When houseplants get brown tips on their leaves, it's generally an indication of poor watering habits. The best way to water a houseplant is to thoroughly flush it until water runs freely out the drainage holes. Shallow watering can cause brown tips on the leaves. -

Shoshana has a great answer and reference. I also learned, during 27 years of working on our church Altar Ministry, that plants need a routine watering schedule. I learned that in our dry, high desert climate to use the following rule of thumb:1. If the tips are brown & brittle, crackle when you touch them, they likely need more frequent or more thorough watering.2. If the tips are brown & soft, it is likely they are being over watered or watered too frequently. You will notice yellowing leaves and new growth yellowing and dying off with over watering. We saw this a lot with our Sanctuary plants especially.With anywhere from 6-12 people taking care the Sanctuary and lobby plants over the years we lost nearly all of them. A specific watering schedule is really important.
