What is your experience with Leland cypress trees?

I live in middle Tennessee and am thinking about planting Leland cypress trees to create privacy between the back of my house and my neighbor. I’m not sure how far apart to plant them. Also, since they are said to grow fast, does anyone find maintenance to be overwhelming? Thanks

I planted these along my back fence as a privacy shield. They are very tall now.- some to the 2nd story maybe. Planted them about 20 years ago. They are about 6-8 ft across. I think I should l have placed them a little farther, and then staggered a 2nd row. But at this point they created a very private back. Water really well the first couple of years. Mine are in a shaded area, so they would have grown faster in the sun. No maintenance really. I have to crawl behind the branches to clean up leaves that blow form other trees. I would plant them again. Also birds really like hiding in them. Nice and green all year. Look beautiful with snow on them.

I planted (1) tree to block the sun from a sitting area. It grew very fast was about as tall as my shoulder. Now taller than the house. Was told it could get to 40ft.

  • They grow quick! My girlfriend has 2 staggered rows of them dividing their property and the property behind and up the hill from them. Have been there about 15 years. They lost a couple to some sort of pest, but due to the staggered planting it is hardly noticeable. She lives in Asheville, NC.

I loved them till they got a disease that caused limbs to die slowly. From what I heard they will all get this disease eventually unless you have commercial spraying equipment. It was a big job cutting them down!

Thank you Kem. I have been hearing that a lot. I love the tree and how fast growing it is but I guess I will have to look at something different. I appreciate your feedback

Plant them at least 6’ apart. They may be small at first but they get huge. Only thing about Leland’s is if you have really hard winds they will blow over, but they do make a beautiful and private border.

according to my experience if we don't use right leyland cypress fertiliser than it will die. last year when i tried to plant them i couldn't do that. but now i understand we need to good fertiliser and good care can work for it.
