Splitting hostas is best done in spring or early fall. Ideally, plan ondividing hostas before spring or fall rains arrive.

If you plant them in early Spring, you should be able to divide the host as in the middle of summer. Late Spring = end of Summer dividing. ☺️

It would be easier to divide in the spring when the plants are just coming up and there is less chance of damaging the leaves. Other than that, you can divide them whenever you want as long as the roots have enough to take hold before it gets too cold.

Hi Aeellis33, The best time of year to split hostas is in the spring when they start growing. Just put your shovel in the plant and cut right thru. The roots are just as important as the leafs. So try to get a nice amount of the roots intact. Have their new hole already dug and just put that new plug right in it. Cover with some of the same soil that you dug out. Wait a few weeks to fertilize because the move will already put the plant in shock. Water them immediately.Best of luck to you.

In the spring when they are first appearing. Drive a shovel straight into the ground to sever the roots, then divide and replant.
