When to prune a butterfly bush

I have a beautiful butterfly bush that goes in every direction .I have read that I can cut back extensively and it will come back. I don't want to lose the bush but it does need some help. When and how much can I safely prune and not lose this beauty.

We cut ours down to about 12 inches high every year. -
