White spots on squash are more than likely, mold. Water only in early mornings before the sun comes up. late afternoon or evening watering usually results in wet leaves all night with cooler temperatures that promote mold growth.

You could try a tepid mild dish soap bath for it. Spray bottle, small amount of mild soap and water. It won't hurt the plant. Also when you water try to not water the plant itself, just the soil around it. Soaker hoses are great for this.

I used the dish soap remedy to discourage pests, but it only burned the leaves. Probably used too much, used it at the wrong time of day (when the sun was high), or didn't have the right measurements or a mild enough detergent. The plants survived, but they sure looked awful for awhile there.

White and black spots are mold and fungus. You need a fungicide. Soap works on bugs, but won't fix spots. We start with baking soda. You already learned not to spray in the day. You are making progress!

Also, be careful the soap you use does not say 'detergent.' Detergent will always burn plants no matter when you spray and in any strength. Soft soap, hand soap...I stay away from dish soap because it is hard to tell sometimes if it is detergent.

Thanks for all the help!  Good to know about the detergent. I have some fungicide I used on my Hollyhocks last year so hopefully when the rain lets up I can spray it on. :)

Spray for powdery mildew: 
 1 gallon of water1 tablespoon of baking soda1 tablespoon of vegetable oil1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid

I use the original blue Dawn throughout my garden & have never had a problem with burning on any plan/shrub or tree...1 Tbsp in a hose end sprayer of a small squirt into a hand held sprayer. You can also use regular old Baking Soda from your pantry to kill powdery mildew. I use 1 Tbsp in a spray bottle filled with water. Make sure you get the underside of the leaves and re-apply every day or so until there is no new 'spots'. Good luck. :)

Ok...the white stuff is probably mold & a good fungicide or some of these other remedies might help but I don't know about using a fungicide in the veggie garden. That being said, the white stuff on the squash looks a lot like the problem I had for several years running with my green beans & it was NOT mold. I had red spider mites. They're very hard to see with the naked eye but turn a leaf over in good light & watch for movement on the leaf.......

My rose bushes dropped all their leaves after treating for mold and fungus. Should I cut the bush back now in June?

Hi Jenny, this might sound crazy but add banana peels and a little beer around the plants. Dig a hole near or at the roots and drop in 2 banana peels and cover. The plants will absorb the nutrients from the peels and the beer and the condition of the plants will GREATLY improve. It also helps keep the bugs away.
