West ????How much lighting do you you receive. What is your location?

I am in the metroplex in Texas. My front yard receives sun almost all afternoon.

Deal with the best local gardening center, preferably one that has been in business for many years or has a great reputation for knowing their plants, and ask if they sell a variety that will survive in full sun in your location. Also do some research for your agricultural zone. If your house color is white it may radiate too much heat onto the plants.

I was going to say "yes" as I had them in my west-facing yard but noticed you live in Texas. While I have vacationed in your State, I wouldn't be a good source of gardening information, therefore, I'd suggest asking a good local nursery or take a look around your neighborhood and see if neighbors are growing them. You may be safe planting them on the other side of the house (facing east) but I'd still go to a nursery for professional advice.

I agree with Shirley, check with a reputable garden center that just doesn't wan to sell you products you won't need, they will also be able to tell you if you will need special amendments for your soil in your area. Also pick the brains of the people in your neighborhood that have the perfect gardens and lawns that they take care of by themselves. They may even help you out with some perennials that need splitting if you volunteer to do it for them. They know what works and what doesn't in you neighborhood and may be willing to share their knowledge to help you in landscaping the right way the first time around.

    Thanks to all of you.

You're welcome, Janis. Another thought is ... is there a Garden Club in your town? If there is, there should be a number to call and ask for advice. You might find it listed under "Clubs" or "Organizations" in your local phone book but you also may find the number in your newspaper - again, local. They are always wanting to increase membersip and will have a number to contact. You don't have to join, of course, but they have lots of information and ideas. Avid gardeners LOVE being asked for advice! 🙂
