i read a great idea on line not to long ago. First you will need to punch holes in the planters
i use an oversized nail and hammer and put the holes in the bottom.
Take plastic water bottles 12 oz and place them in the bottom of the pot in lieu of rocks to create a drainage area before poring dirt in pot. How many will depend on the size of the pot
You need more then one drainage hole.
I use broken clay pots or stones. Sand is good too.
Take pop or beer cans, rinse and crush. Put on the bottom of planter, fill with some dirt. Put in plants and add more dirt.
What has worked for me is lining the bottom of the container with about 1-2 inches deep of small rocks. Rock that are a little larger than the hole. That way if the water can't drain right away, it's away from the roots.
