How do you know a fruit tree is healthy before you buy it at a store?

Sometimes they look wilted, do most big box stores take care of their plants? Is it better to buy from a mail order nursery or local nursery?
I would consult with your local Agriculture Agency and a local Grower/Greenhouse of the selected types of citrus fruits.
When in doubt, visit a reputable nursery or contact your local Ag Extension for best localized suggestions. Citrus can be planted at any time of year, and spring is a good time, which for us in zone 9 or higher is just a few weeks away.
