How do you resolve moss in the yard?

Apply Lime and Moss out by Scotts

Spray it with dawn & water mixture. A couple of days later dethatch it. Spread lime to reduce acidity and sweeten the soil. Repeat if necessary then seed away! Good luck! I hope youll post the results for us to see.

Moss likes shade, unless you address the shade issue and choose a shade loving grass, you probably won't be successful growing grass after removing the moss. Mom always said any grass or ground cover was preferred over mud. I have to say I agree. We tried planting bermuda grass in our needy, weedy yard; however the farming store sold us clover seeds, so now I have a nice yard full of clover and some wild flowers. On well, it's not mud and the bees are happy!

And there is likely a drainage problem. Check your septic line and water line and under the house for leaks. If that is clear, then look at your yard. Is is receiving runoff from your neighbors? You can divert much of the runoff by placeing a fence or retaining wall near the border. Is there any runoff running into your basement or foundation? You can use gravel or a dirt wall to divert that. If there is too much shade for deep-rooted grass to grow, clear out enough foliage to bring in the sunshine. (And follow the suggestions given by others.) You can strew hay over especially soggy ground, and begin building the soil. You can move a layer of moss to another part of the yard, if you wish, or offer it to neighbors. You can dig narrow ditches against the fence lines to further aid in drainage. Happy homeowning! ☺️

After fighting with moss in my front yard, and it always coming back due to a huge old tree and lots of moisture and shade, I gave up. Now I have a mossy glen. I put shade plants/shrubs, rocks and an old wood bucket turned on it's side to decorate. Looks great, inviting and never needs mowing.

You need sun to get rid of moss, otherwise no matter what you do, it will come back.

I use Moss Out in the granules using a lawn spreader. I have also used the liquid in a bottle that attaches to the hose, but it doesn't work as well. The moss will die in a few days and turn black, then you have to rake out the dead stuff. Then miraculously my grass grows back into the area until next winter in the rainy PNW.
