A tough winter can damage the tree, and this last winter certainly was tough. Read up on ways to nurse your tree back to health, but you might have to prune out some dead branches.

Why not go to your local garden center?
The one thing I know about Japanese maples: They do not like the south or west side of the yard; the sun is too strong, the heat is too intense. They prefer to be on the north side, close to the building where they can enjoy the warmth as it is radiated from the building and get light, but not direct sun. Consider where you have it planted. Could it be in the wrong spot and just not able to take it anymore?
