A few of the biggest complaints in apartments is it is so hard to solve storage problems, and make it your own space because you cannot put your own imprint on it.
Keep in mind "movable" and explore using crates, bookshelves and even bins. Crates can be held together with wire ties for stability, then pull out bins can be used. These can be placed along a wall behind a sofa, leaving a little room for access.
A small crate can be set at the end of the kitchen counter to be used as a bread box!

Be aware if you paint or do anything permanent like changing cabinet colors, you really need to run it by your landlord first. It is his property and you might lose your deposit if he doesn't like what you have done. Whatever you do, must be able to be turned back to what it was like when you moved in if you do not have his permission.
