How to Build a Round Farmhouse Planked Table Top

I really wanted a round planked table top in my kitchen redesign. But it's hard to find farmhouse round tops that are the right size, so I decided to build my own! Here's how I did it ...

I am flipping an older home and for the kitchen renovations, I built a banquette to have adequate seating. The round table gives it a bigger appearance while still giving us the seating we need and keeping the table out of the room's walkway. You can follow my home renovations by subscribing to my blog!

To start off, I bought 2x12's from the lumber store and cut them down to approximate size. Once I had my boards laid out, I glued and screwed them. A quick line of wood glue on each edge and a couple of pocket holes with my Kreg Jig.

Then you screw right through one board an into the next making a nice tight (strong) fit.

Now to make a circle, I took half of the diameter of the table size (so 22" for my 44" table), put a pin in the center of the table and tied a string to it that was the length of half the diameter (22" in this case). Using a marker, I kept the string tight and made a circle around the table. Now I had my line to cut! I used my jigsaw to cut my circle which worked just perfectly.

From here, I sanded and stained the top. Once my stain was dry, I was ready for epoxy resin and top coat. Learn my stain mix and lessons I learned using epoxy in my full blog post here. .

Gorgeous! It's a brand new farmhouse style table top that already has a lot of character. Most of the cracks are filled in - the few that are still left aren't very deep so it should be easier to keep this table top clean.

I love this project. Would like to plank the top of my metal coffee table but don't know how to attach the planks to the metal

  I've drilled right through metal before and attached with screws. Worth a try!

  As Jenni says HSS drill bit through the metal (1 size up from the wood screws you intend to use) then swap to a wood bit (one size smaller than the screws) to put a pilot hole in the wooden top. You can then use wood screws to attach put it all together. You could even put a washer in between the screw head and and the metal base for extra longevity.
