Are these rooms an open concept? What is your style...country, traditional, contemporary or modern or some type of combination? One more question, what colors are your large pieces of furniture such as your couch? Let me/us know and then we can throw some ideas at you.
Place your table in the back of your room or in a separate spot from your sitting area. If you have a cabinet you can use for china/dinnerwear place it close to your table. Decorate that area and your living room in cordinate colors. I have a small den with a dining area in the back behind our recliners. It is very cozy. We love it!
Play with the furniture arrangement until you get a good flow. Grab a friend, make a pot of coffee and move things around. Then add back in accessories and other decor.
Yikes! I can relate to that problem, because I had it. I used a sofa to give the illusion of both rooms flowing into each other, yet sending the message that there were still slight cues to differentiate the use of the space.
If you place the back of the sofa to the designated dining area, you can put a sofa table console behind the sofa to also serve as a sideboard when dining.
if its an open concept room, I've also seen window frames floated from the ceiling on chains or rope to divide the room. You could also float some shoji screens as a room divider. If you want to divide the room, you can add a row of tall bookcases and use fabric or grass cloth to paper the back.
