I would use a bonding primer before using ANY kind of paint so that it will be more durable. After painting I would use a poly acrylic sealer. If you don't want it to be shiny you can get a dull or matte finish on the sealer.

You can use Rustoleum or Homax tub and tile paint. Also Rustoleum, Diach, or Giani countertop paint kits. Must be epoxy based paint.
If changing the color of it doesn't work out for you there are lots of inexpensive options for covering it up with backsplash tile that just sticks on and looks really nice.
Marble is extremely porous and I would acid wash it with white vinegar. That will etch the factory shine right off of it and give you a surface you can dye, not paint.

the dye is called Concrete & Masonry Stain. Several companies make it and every Big Box DIY store carries at least one brand of it.
it will stain the grout too, unless you hand sponge paint each marble bit.
If you have hard water, I would clear coat it, if you want a shiny surface.
