Of course paint... replace bulbs with candles or plants .... wire and beads can be fun too πŸ‘πŸ½

REplace the bulbs with more modern bulbs, like Edison bulbs. If you have fluorescent bulbs and can't replace the fixture yet, change at least one bulb to pink. And clean the cover while you have it out. If you have plenty of other lighting, you can paint the inside or outside with latex paint in any color or pattern to make the cover a highlight instead of an eyesore. Best wishes πŸ˜‡

Does your fixture have a globe on it if so you can place it in the top of your dishwasher or soapy water in your sink with a dash of bleach to shine it up, then you might try the new bright white LED 60 bulbs. I put them in my kitchen and it was so much brighter and cheerful but it also showed where my kitchen needed more cleaning. Ugh!
