Cement it. Make a small frame, pour cement and before it dries dribble a color powder or paint (I found both work) with a thin stick drag it thru and around to give a marbled look.
Rustoleum or Giani countertop paint kit.
They make kits for countertops, from brands like Gianni and Rustoleum, but you would need to check to see they can be used over wood.
