Hello Carol,
Fix a Shelf just above the machines and then it won't bother you.

  Yes! There are lots of examples on Pinterest and You Tube. You could then decant your laundry products and add these to the shelf (and a little decor, lamp, fake/real plant). Suddenly it’ll be much nicer to hang out there!

I agree. Install a shelf above the gap. Also gives extra storage.
