Should fireplace mantel be as wide as the fireplace or leave space?
each end. It is approx. 68 inches across. Firebox is standard size.

The mantel is usually slightly wider on each end that the firebox. You can even make it wider if you wish. The depth depends on your taste and what you want to put on that mantel.
