    I would paint it with appropriate paint to withstand heat, or if not using fireplace, then the paint doesn`t matter so I would go with black or a color that blends in with the surround. That way it doesn`t stand out so much but blends in better with the surrounding decor.

    I painted mine and wow, the difference. But make sure you use paint that can withstand the heat

    I painted mine black with paint that was made for fireplaces. Looks much more updated.

    Paint the stone a light color (prime first). Chalk paint looks good. Remove the brass cover if the fireplace is not functional or paint with a heat tolerant paint. Leave the mantle dark and possibly the mantle supports too.
