I would use heat-resistant paint.
You can use any paint, up to within 18” around the firebox and then it’s high-temp paint.
We purchased paint at Lowe's made for high heat areas
If they’ve never been painted, I would use a masonry/concrete dye/stain.
It’s not going to scorch, nor peel and is scrubbable.
