What colors go well in a living room with a dark brown leather couch?

I'm wanting to spruce up my living room. I live in a small apartment, so I unfortunately have boring beige walls and tan carpet. I have a dark brown leather couch, an armchair with ottoman (black, cream and taupe stripes, but I can put a slipcover on it), and a mix of different shades of brown wood furniture (bookshelves, tv table - which I can paint). I live in the Midwest, but am definitely not country! I'm more inclined to modern and beachy styles. Just looking for some color combo ideas!! Thanks!

  • Ok, you have picked your color pallate! Beachy pale blues, greens, turquoise and aqua all will look lovely with the brown furniture items you currently own. Choose a couple pieces to paint to coordinate. Change out a few sofa pillows, a throw, some candles, a serving tray, photo frames,a lamp. Makeover items you have first and other items can be collected over time. Check thrift stores, Goodwill, flea markets that may have items to go with your new decor with some minimal updating.

Gold is making a big comeback too. You can also add gold accents here and there to give a bit of pop and sparkle too.

  • Try some modern print fabric pillows wih lots of color. You could even find a print with some of the colors of your chair. Since it is striped you can use florals, or more modern prints as long as you pick up a little of the taupe or brown. You could go with just about any color from cools to warm earthy tones.

You could surely use greens and oranges, autumn colors. In my own house I actually use red and blue, an Americana theme. Go to the paint store and pick up paint samples. Bring the home and hold up against the wall, floor, etc. and see which palette you prefer. I also think yellow and blue could be classy looking. Good luck.

Paint colors are very personal ,choose what you like and not what others have to say. The most important factor is lighting as what looks good in the store may not work in your home.Select color charts, choose your color and test in your home. One will say green,orange,purple....its your choice
