Command center for my kitchen

I want to make a command center in my kitchen, the problem is the space is only 20 1/2 inches wide. I have a framed cork board that is 18 inches wide. Will all the creative Hometalkers give me some suggestions?
Thank You in advance for your help, I will be looking forward to your suggestions.

I have searched home talk for ideas in which there are so many, however because of your cork board I cannot come up with a solution. So my suggestion is possibly starting over and look at what others have done.

@Patricia Fluharty possibly a chalk board. You mentioned that space was an issue. My comment was not meant for anything else but that.I did not say to copy anyone.Sorry I tried.

HimPatricia Of you want to use your cork board, go for it! You don't need to start over and copy anyone. I would add a paper page of a weekly calendar and use a different color marker for each family member. Each Sunday, sit down and go through you week and add events, appointments, test dates etc. you can paint the edge of your cork board to coordinate with your kitchen. Office stores have all sorts of cool push pins too, to hold permission slips, coupons, etc on the board. If you have a desk space available, you can add some stackable basket like "in and out" office baskets to corral paper work. Maybe chalkboard paint some labels to clearly mark what is what...possibilities are really endless!

Barbara S, thanks for your suggestions. I would like to add "In and Out" baskets, folders etc. I do not have desk space available, wish I did. The center is just for my husband and myself. I am trying to declutter the counter top. Thanks for your help.

Patricia do you have side walls or is it just the wall in front of you above the counter?

You could look for a small stand with shelves and put your baskets in there, or trays, or pretty boxes. I have one that is 16" W X 32"H and it has 4 shelf spaces, so I use those decorated boxes with the magnetic lid closures (some are like small suitcases), like what you get at Ross, to put on each shelf. They fit perfectly and I can put a lot of stuff in there and hide the mess, and it's pretty. It also gives you space on top for whatever you want, I have a pretty, carved blue wood box on top for more stuff. I make jewelry and do crafts so am always looking for ways to hide all the "stuff" I collect for projects. Or you could use the top for paper clips, pens, post-its, etc., whatever you need, and hang the cork board above that. That would look good, and be functional.....works for me.

Thank you Cindi for your reply. My trash can will be under the command center, thats the only place I have for the can. I do like your idea about the small stand, maybe I should more thinking about the CC.

it sounds like your space for your communications center is just sl. larger than mine. the dry erase board just fits. a row of pockets trimmed from a hang- it -in- the -closet shoe bag a few above and a few below can contain many things from paperwork folded or rolled, pens, scratch, papers, mail....
