I love love love cooking with fresh garlic! And currently, I store/display it by hanging it in its mesh bag on a loose hook over my kitchen tile. I'm looking for ideas to upgrade the situation.
Thank you!!

You can store them in a nice jar in olive oil.

But if you do choose to do this, you need to add some sort of acid to the oil. Like some lemon juice. It hinders the development of any nasty bacteria that can make you very sick or even kill you if it has been growing in there for a while.

I've always stored it away form light - seems to keep it fresher and doesn't sprout. What about a tall cylindrical glass vase, the apothecary style containers or candle holder?Just stack the garlic inside and and it will look special with the "extra" of the container.

I peel and freeze mine in an air tight container. Keeps fresh forever, makes cooking faster.

I get a ton of fresh garlic during the summer from my CSA and have had the most succes with storing it the way you do. I put it , oldest bulbs last, in a mesh onion bag and hang it on the side of my cookbook bookshelf where it is dim. I keep two bulbs in one of those three tiered wire mesh basket hanging from my pot rack. You could also hang such a basket in a corner of the kitchen. It looks nice with shallots and multicolored onions and keeps them at their freshest.

You need a dark, dry, well ventilated area for garlic. Usually along the walls of basement stairs are safe for garlic. Never leave garlic in the sun as it shortens it's life. Never store it in olive oil as one writer suggested because you could poison yourself using this method. If you flavour olive oil with fresh garlic, use the oil up within a few weeks to be safe.

  • I would purchase or make a holder - similar to what they sell to hang bananas from.

I put mine in fridge and it keeps just fine. I do same with onions and potatoes except I keep those in different drawers. Since you already have it out and use it regularly, how about a nice bowl?

Garlic is best stored in a cool, dry area in your kitchen. A kitchen cupboard, pantry, or shady corners on your counter top are good suggestions.

    Avoid to place in refrigerator.
