Cabinets have a short shelf in the center that is hard to reach and really useless.

I have the same kind of thing in my lower cabinets. I put long handle pans on that short shelf. not heavy, so I can reach them easily without having to climb in the cabinet LOL. I also have muffin pans that are easy to stack and pull out.

drawers for pots, pans and cake pans. Long thin cupboards to stand cookie trays, cooling racks and cutting boards

The best overall fix is to install two drawers with full extension slides. This will allow you to fully extend the drawers and be able to see everything in them. If you do this , you will add even more space because you will now have two full drawers not a shlef and a half.

Full extension drawers also mean you no longer need to get on hands and knees to root around the back of the cabinet. Although it cost more than I was prepared for, I'm glad I splurged on retro fitting my cabinets.

For upper cabinets I use the wire stackable racks that almost double the space. They hold up well, even under the weight of my stoneware dishes.

Additional storage can be found on the inside of cabinet doors for small items that get lost in deep drawers.

We're in the process of remodeling our kitchen right now and ALL of my base cabinets will be drawers. I'm getting tired of bending over or sitting down on the floor to find stuff.

Artemis, I agree with you completely. I have hopes of installing new, but reasonably priced new cabinets soon, and have told the cabinet maker I want all drawers in the bottom and adjustable shelves in the top cabinets. I'm 76 years old with two knee replacements and I have a hard time getting into bottom cabinets, too.

I bought plastic bins from Walmart that fit in the cupboards. I store my Tupperware, lids, gravy packets and croutons , etc in them then when i need something I pull out the basket and bring it to the counter above it to get what I want. It's cheap and a fast fix.

I may well have to do this too!! should make most of my cabinets fully acessable.

Moving to a camper. Plans include building a small house but who knows God plan?

Depending on the height of your cabinets, you can install hooks to hang pots on.I put pots and pans in upper cabinets and less commonly used items in lower.Use a divider used in offices to separate files for pot lids. These dividers come in different sizes.I use one for my plates and smaller one for salad plates and shallow bowls.I keep my iron skillets in oven.Even if you forget it works to season them while preheating.

Mine are all the same way! Who designed these things?!? Definitely not someone who uses a kitchen, lol. Following this for great advise

While I agree that retrofitting with drawers is the best solution, you don't say what your budget is. A couple of repurposing ideas that may help things be better organized: shop thrift stores for an old-fashioned magazine rack. Put it on its side, and you will have two shelves rather than one to store all those pots and pans. I put small tension rods (cafe curtain style) from front to back at the sides of my cabinets, from the bracing on the front door to the back wall. I stand pot lids up along the wall. I purchased a couple of cooling racks at a thrift store. I slide bowl lids under the rack and put the bowls on top of it. You have some decorative items stored in the photo. Think of the cupboards like prime real estate: You want to put your most used items closest to the spot they will be used. Less used items or items that are simply being stored for the two or three times a year you use them should find a less "handy" place. Don't forget to organize under the sink-dish detergent, scrub brushes, and a waste basket often go at the front, but there may be "storage space" potential in plastic boxes behind the waste basket or detergent for rrely used but sweet items you wish to keep.
