I have organized my house with plastic containers, organizers from Dollar Tree. I hope these things help you to organize. It will be well worth it! Best wishes to you.
Go through each room starting in a corner or inside the door. Make of pile of things that belong in another room, one that is garbage, one for stay in the room, one that is things you don't need and can be donated or garage sales. Use bins that can go on closet shelves and utilize under the bed boxes and the bags you can vacuum down under the bed for things that don't wrinkle or are out of season. I use a chest of drawers for things like extra smaller picture frames, good table linens, purses, etc. Once you get through the one room, disperse the one pile to the appropriate rooms, throw the garbage and put the donate/garage sale items in a box. Take a break for a while, you don't have to do all the house in one day or you may loose interest and not finish at all. You may have to be brutal on what you keep and what you give away. Unless it is holiday décor, if you don't use it at all, get rid of it.
In addition to the excellent answer above, I store things in suitcases.
do some purging and narrow down to things that serve as a function and are practical but also beautiful- then you don't feel like you need to decorate as well as have all your items necessary in a house hold. for example- open shelving in the kitchen- have jars of spices and such but put them in clear jars to show off color, throw blankets? store them on an old ladder to show them off but they take up less floor space leaning against wall, jewelry? use a few hooks on wall to display as "art" but they are organized and not taking up counter space in jewelry box, etc.
