We use a mulching lawn mower and skip the raking.
I have always used a mulching mower (or bagging) or a leaf blower that will also suck up the leaves, chop them into small pieces, and then fill a bag. That option is handy in areas that won't be accessible to a mower.
We have a mulching lawn mower that bags the leaves, also have used a leaf blower that literally minces the leaves when it sucks them up. This is made by Black and Decker.
Or maybe hire some teenagers to do this?
Amy: you can use a power blower to get them to a corner of yard...
We have a wooded area that we can drag our leaves to. We rake them onto a big tarp and then drag them into the wooded area to dump in huge piles. By spring the huge piles of leaves are pretty much decomposed from heavy snowfall and by fall the pile is dirt so we can just start all over again! We also have an expensive leaf vacuum that attaches to our riding lawn mower. It mulches the leaves as they pass into a bin that we have to empty when it is full. The bin is quite large and the machine picks up huge amounts of leaves. It was a big investment but worth every penny. It saves us hours and days of work and is a lot easier on an old body! We have two acres of leaves to pick up in the fall with many deciduous trees on our property. I often wonder how many TRILLION ZILLION BAZILLION fall from the trees in the fall!
Hi Amy, another trick is to place your open plastic bags in either a big bin or box and clip so you have a big open bag in which to place the leaves you've gathered in whatever way you prefer. Then you can close the bag with a twistie-tie when full and repeat the process.
We have a Garden (Leaf) Grabber. Circular metal prongs that that scoop up the leaves. Works great
Hi Amy, I'm not sure if this will help, but we use a blower to blow all our leaves into the garden beds. It's a great mulch for the plants and when they decompose they feed the soil too.
Have your trash bags opened in a container so you can easily put leaves inside without having to hold the bag open. I use a large shovel to pick up the leaves and place in the bag.
I don’t rake actually as I read in several places it’s good for your lawn not to.
Hi Amy: What I do is use my lawnmower, with the bag on, and mow over them. I set the wheels a bit lower, and the leaves go into the bag and then I put them in my garden, around bushes and the rest into the compost, or out with the yard waste.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
I use a leaf blower to get into piles and then a rake that "grabs" the leaves. You can also use a pair of leaf claws:
