You can level it by hand. Adding any soil you may need. Then you can rent a vibrating plate compactor to compact the soil. Home Depot has tool rentals. You can also lay down some crushed stone, level that out, and compact it.

We had someone come in and rake ours flat and added a layer of gravel.

  • You can rake it to grade it, tamp the dirt down and then add rocks/ gravel on top. We looked into the idea, but didn't do it because we were concerned about weed or grass growth, so I'd definitely look into prevention measures, but I love the look.

Hello. We graded ours and used pea gravel. I am not sure I would recommend pea gravel however.

Do not use pea gravel. It will flush away too easily. Use a much larger grade. Many building supply companies will dump and rake the gravel. Concrete contractors will do the same and tamp the gravel with a large pad that is gas powered and packs the gravel. I just had mine done. It was very quick and easy for them.

We have had both a gravel driveway and blacktop. Both require maintenance, and the gravel one does require occasional weed whacking. Half of it was dug up to replace part of our sewer line last winter, so I was grateful we hadn't black topped it like we originally planned!

I used pea gravel and its lasted 7 years but now needs a bit filling in here and there this summer. I used 7 tons of pea gravel for the drive and a circular pad in front of the garage. The pea gravel is easier on the feet, and doesn't track as bad into the house as the old black sharp rock that had been there.

A tractor with a blade to grade it and make sure to have drainage ditch to divert water from running down it. You might also add crusher run to firm it up.
