How Can I bring color to a yard all dog, concrete & basketball?

I have a 2 year old Golden Labicon .I also have 4 kids. We have an all concrete back yard with just its borders surrounded by dirt and vacant of plant life. A small corner for the dog busines. I would like to know what plants or decorations I could put there that would not harm my dog but would also be chew deterent and draught tolerant. Should I build a barrier? Plant cactus? Or fill with rock and paint the fence coverd in flowers and greenery?icon
Thank You
Leslie W.
We have a 1/2 court with in ground net, a lot of blank fence. No plants, lots of boulders.
The reason for no plant life
A water feature and in ground fire pit. A fence that is old and supported by 2x4’s during windy seasons.

There really is not that much spaces choosing the correct plants will be difficult.Do you want annuals or perennials and what is your exact location

I did colorful Mexican tile on my concrete block wall. You could do that to the little upright wall at the back. Come up with a design and go to a tile outlet that sells Mexican tile. You can also find it on line.

Go to my post on Hometalk "DIY Talevera tile accent wall. Also, I have made "Polatems". My creation of stacaked pots and plates on a rebar post. Check that out on my Hometalk page too. You could do maybe three of them up against the fence on the raised area.

If you don't want to hurt your dog, steer clear of cactus. Ouch!

Is that your wiod fence? If so why not flower boxes attached to it. How about potted plants Home Depot, Lowes any garden center sells some pretty colorful flower pots in sll sizes and heights.

I noticed your fence and "outside" wall art or you could build easy flower boxes, attach to the fence , combining art and flower boxes would really brighten the space with no worries for the dog!

Paint a fun mural or scene on the fence. If the fence is sturdy, you can hang plants on it too! I’m thinking a Mountian scene or beach scene! You can put up a barrier but if your pup is (oh that looks fun) kind of pup, use containers for plants and put rocks around the space and cover the lack lusture soil. Have fun with it.

What a challenge! If I was to have this space, this would be my ideas.

If I could paint the fences I would go with a dark grey, don't faint. I would then make up platforms to negate the slopes, back with thin tall trellis, plant up pots with climbers, and let nature and a bit of TLC take its course. In the second picture with you cute dog ,I saw a perfect place to cap the exsisting wall with some planking to create a seating area, and with the rocks and boulders lying around I would build these behind the seating using soft rockery arid tolerant or even small creeping plants, with bright blooms or scented low growing herbs. Probably a decent garden centre woud be able to help in that field. These a just a few ideas that may help . good luck.Best Wishes from the UK.

extra ideas .Looking at the third photo. I would create a cosier area by setting short posts in concrete in cheap pots and using short trellis panels and using large hooks and eyes,to hang them between the posts. you could create a cosier area around the pit fire for the adults while protecting them from the ball games, and adjustable to rearrange or store away. And during non ball evening parties the platforms around the garden would be perfect for tea lights in jars.I would think about plastic flower pots by high risk 'ball areas'. So many on the the market now that look like pottery or stone. Sorry for bombarding you. Hope all goes well.

If this is your kids favorite place to be then decorate it for them! Begin by painting the retaining wall a bright happy color and possibly adding some outdoor cushions on top if there is enough room. Anything you add to the wall area has to be childproof and non-breakable. Hobby Lobby and Michaels (crafts and home deco stores) has metal and wood signs devoted to all sports and kid games; also hang discarded items such as an old bike wheel, bike basket, doll buggy, etc. Mix in something for every member of your family including yourself and the dog! Voila, a personalized backyard "sports lounge" to enjoy!

Have you thought of laying down a strip of Astro Turf (artificial grass) along the top of the wall for greenery until the kids grow up? Memories are forever - kids are not! I’d go with whatever gives you less stress and upkeep! Have fun, Mom!

It seems in the answers you have gotten everyone has left out that you can paint the concrete you stand on. Here's a few ideas...https://www.pinterest.com/explore/painted-concrete-patios/?lp=true

IF it is your fence, paint it and hang some wood pallets along. remove some planks and plant flowers/plants. Soon you will have "living walls".

II would add tile accents and perennials indigenous to your area. Also large colorful pots with bright flowers and maybe a sitting area if room allows.

I agree with the vertical ideas. Use the fence for flowers, tiles, or what ever sounds fun.

Even without painting the fence, especially if it’s not yours, you can use it to hang things on. There are metal plant pot holders that just hook onto the fence. If you don’t have time for real plants, use artificial ones which are easy to change out by season or occasion. Use pallets to make a wall of succulents simply by stacking and glueing craft store wood or plastic crates inside the pallet, then secure (artificial) or real greenery. Hang or lean old window frames, painted and weathered in bright or complimentary colors. Just a few ideas I hope get your diy juices flowing!😄
