There is no such thing as maintenance free, You can create gardens that are less work ,but it depends on you location, lighting, soil conditions and space
Look into xeriscaping! That is such a tiny yard it would not be hard to do or very expensive.

Hi Themary, You can cover the ground with plastic or landscaping fabric to prevent weeds and grass, then cover it with pea gravel or wood chips. If you want visual interest, here's a link with some ideas! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/454300681134443002/
Have fun!
What about a nice groundcover that requires no maintenance except watering when called for. If you really want to keep it simple, use white gravel or stones over plastic or landscaping fabric and viola!
Stone and/or decorative gravel with a few dwarf plants or potted plants to change out with seasons is an option
Look into mondo grass or mother of thyme, looks fantastic and does not need mowing. You can, if you like, but don't need to. You would want to smother what you have right now, scalp it as low as you can then cover with cardboard and pine needles or mulch (for aesthetics). When you remove the carboard in the early spring, spread a pre emergent to keep weed seeds from germinating. You can get corn gluten at a reasonable price over the net. Then plant your plants, keep them watered and watch them spread. Watch for any weeds that may grow and pull them. You can grow thyme from seeds, but I have not had a lot of success with it. Mondo is best bought as plants, if you get larger plants they can be divided easily and can really take the abuse.
Cover the area with black plastic sheets and fill with mulch. If you want plants, use landscape fabric to let water through.
