If your soil cannot be amended ,try making the area with container plantings.Annuals...New Guinea Impatience,Caladiums,Fuchsia,Non-stop Begonia,...Cpleous...For perennials,Heucheras,Hostas, bleeding hearts,Lily of the valley,Bleeding Hearts.
do a google search of plants that like dry soil & shade. Look for perrenials & make sure they will grow in your zone. Raised beds are another option.
Have you ever thought of putting in a pond? We gave it a shot and could not be happier with the outcome!!
I have yet to find a shady area that hostas will not grow you might want to give them a try
Vinca or some other ground cover might work.
If you really want grass there; creeping red fescue loves dry shade.
Thanks I'll check it out.
In what State or Province are you located? I would recommend the ground cover called "Pachysandra". It spreads, grows about 5" in height and loves the shade. You can also take cuttings: poke a hole in the soil at about a 30 degree angle, insert cutting, keep moist and new plants will form. You also could plant Sedum or Wooly Thyme - the latter stands up to foot traffic very well.
