I resolved this issue by making my 'back' yard the 'Dog Yard' -- it is gravel, and concrete and they have a dig box for digging, plenty of shade from mature trees, and I burn the yard at least 2x a year to remove vegetative debris and any grasses/weeds that may spring up; makes pooper scooping a breeze! My front/side yards are fully landscaped w/ flowers, shrubs, annuals/perennials, etc.

Be happy you don't have to mow the yard. If it were me I'd buy planters for flowers, herbs, and veggies

I'm having this problem, too. There must be SOME other solution other than the two previous ones...

  • I have a small yard and 6 dogs and still have grass. You may just need a different variety. Another option would be to go with a groundcover like creeping thyme or sedum, my favorites. I would also install a tumbled gravel in a section or two. Make sure it is "tumbled" so there are no sharp edges to hurt the dogs if it gets in their paws. Another option would be to lay pavers over a section and have ground cover grow in between, like a pretty checkerboard - line up and space a few inches apart. I refuse to have dirt as it makes the dogs filthy and ends up in my house. I want them happy, healthy and clean!

Have you considered raised planters? That could give you an area for decorative and/or food plants. Containers and poles that hold containers could look pretty also. Not knowing how small is you small yard you might just want to put a colored mulch down. And because my neighbors rooster loves to hope the fence into my yard I have planted wandering Jew and spider plants in the ground. They're green and the vigorous digging he does is pretty impervious to them.
