I saw a post once last year where they painted what looked liked pieces of picket fencing. They painted them the color/colors they wanted and put them in at varying heights. Some had flowers painted on them. I also have seen where old plates were sunk in the soil to make a border.
I remember a post last year they used wine bottles.
We used landscape timbers and cut them into irregular lengths. We soaked them in wood treatment, let them dry. We dug a trench along the edges of the beds. We stood cut timbers upright so the tops were at different heights. We replaced the dirt and packed it down to hold them in place. We did this 15 years ago and they still look great.
